For many years I was involved with a number of staff and outside practitioners in helping to develop leadership, advocacy and public speaking for the grassroots, frontline leaders.
During my earliest days involved in medical professional leadership, there was no training program for county medical society executives and president s or for specialty section vice chairs and chairs.
Additionally, every time one came up with a new idea or program one needed funds and there was no experience or training for that.
During my elected time at the Ontario Medical Association and the Canadian Medical Association, I, together with the help of staff and volunteers, championed the development of such training for grassroots, leaders, advocates and even becoming elected officials.
I was able to work with many skilled professionals as presenters and facilitators and maintained my relationships with them.
The tacit knowledge shared by people who lived through problems on a daily basis and survived many mistakes became a desired focus.
My desire to have this available as broadly as possible outside of the capital cities of Toronto and Ottawa both inside the profession including its youngest members in training, as well as outside the profession to assist in building better businesses organizations and communities was the reason for creating Schumacher Research & Leadership Group.
Built around five key skills for leadership: public speaking, advocating with elected officials,
dealing with and communicating through earned media, being effective at meetings and building and maintaining a network, we have worked with over 500 individuals in 6 provinces around Canada.
